Augmented reality, virtual reality, or mixed reality- which one will provide future solutions?
Technology has advanced itself far beyond one’s imagination. With the fast pacing world, it becomes hard to keep up with the latest releases. The technology is so much advanced these days that virtual reality which was once dreamed of has come true. And not only this augmented reality and mixed reality techniques are well received by the public as well.
The most important fact to understand is What is augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality? Are they all the same?
Augmented reality is that part which adds the digital aspects to a live view often by using a smartphone or a camera. AR is based on footprints of the physical surroundings and only adds the overlaying computer-generated effects like animation or 3-D viewers. These techniques are widely used by Snapchat in their camera lenses and also were used in PokemonGo, the game which was based wholly on the concepts of augmented reality. Not only these augmented reality filters are present on all kinds of social media platforms – Instagram and Facebook. Brands see the growing craze about the augmented filters and so impose these in their cameras. Not only these augmented reality is being used everywhere.
StyleDotMe, which is an augmented reality solutions provider for the jewelry market plans to tap into the international market after being able to raise fresh financing from new and old investors. Earlier StyleDotMe raise 3.5 crore INR led by survam partners which is a family office of hero motocorp. Existing investor Angel Network also participated in this funding round with participation from bobby Kothari, jwelex India director.
Pokemon go preps up the pipeline to hit the next phase of AR gaming. John Hanke, chief executive officer of San Fransisco-based studio told a group of reporters that they were working hard with the game pipeline and that they will be looking forward to the next year to launch a new version of the AI based game. Pokemon Go maybe four years old now but remain the highest-grossing smartphone game estimating $908 million and still increasing. The company will be organizing its annual festival meet up online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic in view.
Is virtual reality something different?
Yes, as far as virtual reality is concerned it is the complete immersion into the reality that is presented to you by the means of a VR headset and that it completely shuts you out of the physical world. The use of VR devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and google cardboard, has been of much relief to the users around the world. Using the above named technologies the users can be transported into several real world or fully imagined or what can be said as virtual environments such as in the middle of a war or a Jurassic era. Companies are rolling up their sleeves and are all set to sell the VR kits to people. Imaginate chief executive Hemanth Satyanarayana said that the demands in this sector have jumped from two and half times last month and the major demands come from the manufacturing sector where the companies need to train their staff but cannot due to the physical constraints ongoing in the pandemic.
At temp staffing company Quess, as many as 380,000 grounded employees are getting their training sessions by the means of virtual reality. Face reading artificial intelligence technique gives them a detailed report of how well they are speaking and what they can improve on. This should not be confused with video conferencing as VR is used where high precision is required and also Satyanarayana said a large educational institution in India recently asked for a VR soutions to conduct lectures and classes as the pandemic has hit the education sector to the rock bottom.
More figures on the virtual reality and augmented reality sector:
Queppelin founder Prafulla Mathur, said that the company is now expediting a VR solution for a bluechip company in India, which will be available soon for use as it is in the beta phase of testing

LogMeIn is a company that enables remote working through online meetings and remote access of devices, among other things. Moreover, it is giving governments, educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and non-profitable organisations free ‘Emergency Remote Work Kits’ for three months.

IBM is also not far behind. The company has helped its clients with remote capability offerings, upgrading their networks, and enabling collaborative technologies to ensure productivity and interest of their employees, said Lingraju Sawkar, general manager, Global Technology Services, IBM India, and also the company has been investing in that sector for the past few years.
Apart from VR and AR, there are two more terms in this field, mixed reality, and extended reality.
Mixed reality or MR uses both the techniques of the VR and AR. The mixed reality combines the real and the digital world. The mixed reality is taking off with Microsoft’s Hololens.
Extended reality or XR is an umbrella cut term which is using the concepts of reality but providing us with a completely different designed virtual world to experience. It uses the techniques of augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality. It also uses a combination of technologies in which human-machine interactions are generated by computer technology and wearables, where the ‘X’ or any variable be used for any current or future spatial computing technologies.
All these technologies have been a breakthrough for the world. There was a time when we only dreamed of something that this could happen while studying about it in books which dates back to 1688 when Thomas Savery developed a steam-powered water pump. That was considered as a technological advancement so huge that the world would never recover from it, but little did we know it was just the beginning and we have barely even scratched the surface.
