The college has just started. Students with so many dreams and aspirations passed from school this year. But who thought that this will be the new normal where there is no campus, no physically going to classrooms and listening to lectures (or not), roaming and hanging with friends at the canteen and a dozen other activities. The bliss of college and university life will be missed by the present batch of 2020-2021 and our deepest sympathies are with them. But fret not, there are plenty of activities that are still possible. If your classes are happening on Zoom/ Google Meet/ Microsoft Classroom and the like, consider yourself lucky enough that you can still get to see your friends and teachers, albeit virtually.
Make Your Mark
The pros of online classes are still that you get to get up early like you would if your college was functioning normally. You can still dress up and look up at your time table. It is good to introduce yourself to all your teachers and your peers as well so that you create your mark in front of others. Some students are still depressed that they can’t go to college and all their college/ university shopping lies untouched, worry not. You can still have the best years of your life studying in this novel way, something undreamed of before.
Communication is Important
When a class is being conducted online, it is very important to communicate and interact in the class. Participate in discussions, amicably view your opinions and question the teachers if a concept is left unclear to you. Submit your projects on time so that teachers remember you well so that when you get to go to university, you can get to be the teacher’s favourite already. Make friends in the online class as well. When the teacher puts you in any group activity, it is imperative to put your input in the group and make it vocal. Try to establish a rapport with your group members because you are going to be with each other for at least two or more semesters, depending on the course you have opted. Hence, it is all about communication.
Visible Presence Matters
The one thing good about colleges and universities (for most of them) is that there is no uniform. So it is a good plan to raid your wardrobe and sort out the best, classiest and funkiest clothes (top only, no bottoms, if you got it). So don’t be sad if your online shopped clothes have not been put to use yet. Make a time table of your clothes as you do for your subjects. Dress modestly, do your hair well and please, brush your teeth and wash your face before you sit down for class. Even you are just up from sleep and joined class, it becomes evident from your voice and teachers and professors know this bluff very well. It is also very uncool to keep your video off; the students who keep their video on are instantly highlighted and recognised. It also shows that you are genuinely taking interest in the class so running, brownie points.
Extra Activities- Webinars the new Seminars
While in college and university life, there are several activities that the institution organises for the students. Especially in the COVID pandemic, many webinars are conducted all across the colleges and universities worldwide, often in partnership with each other, to connect the student fraternity and to invite their views and brilliant ideas on their take on this unprecedented situation. One should be always up for any activity that the college plans to organise and show enthusiasm. Because as much as you rely on the college and university, the vice versa is also true. The universities welcome students and encourage students to participate so that it becomes a two-way and doubly benefiting endeavour. So you might also have virtual Fresher’s Party, virtual Farewell party, some online competitions like Poster making Competition on Republic Day/ Independence Day, Extempores, Debates and Speech Competitions. It is a good thing to participate in one, two or all of them.
Lastly, Pray that this ends soon and you can get scolded in proper classes, not online
Even after you are already doing all this and trying your best to enjoy online classes and lectures, this still cannot be compared to the joy of attending classes offline. The sheer joy of knowing that tomorrow is college and you’ll be meeting friends and teachers. The canteen person already knows what you like to munch in break time; the known corridors and parking lot and everything in between. Those were the days.
We can all but pray for this pandemic to end sooner so that the degree can be completed formally. The fact that education is much more valued and the worth of college and university is established is undebatable.
